How to Reduce Energy Costs in Business
A common oversight when trying to reduce your business expenses is reducing unnecessary energy costs. Implementing energy efficient measures can improve your commercial energy bills, benefit your sustainability records, and reduce your carbon footprint.
Heating
If you want to reduce your electricity bill, being diligent with the heating can be a good place to start. Make sure doors and windows are well-insulated, and try to keep them closed when the heating is on to avoid wasting energy. Install heating reflectors behind radiators to improve their efficiency, and insulate hot water tanks, boilers, and pipes. Regularly service your boilers, heaters, and air conditioning to make sure they are working at their optimum.
Your workplace temperature must always be at least 16oC (or 13oC in a workplace with rigorous physical effort). However, consider keeping corridors or unused meeting rooms at a lower temperature than the main working area to reduce your heating bills, and don’t heat the workplace when it is empty, such as on a bank holiday.

Switch to LED bulbs and utilise lighting sensors in corridors or bathrooms so lights are not accidentally left on. Also, make the most of available natural light by placing desks near windows, keeping blinds raised, and painting the walls with light-coloured paint.
Technology
Keep your technology, equipment, and devices running at peak performance without wasting excess energy by regularly servicing them and implementing power-saving or eco settings. Switching from desktop computers to laptops can be a good idea as laptops use 80% less energy, and be sure to turn off electronic devices when you leave the office. Maintain manufacturing or kitchen equipment and be mindful when running the dishwasher or boiling the kettle.
