Off-Peak Electricity Times for UK Businesses
To save money on your office energy bills, consider using ‘Time of Use’ tariffs. These tariffs can help you save, as it’s the cheapest time to use electricity during off-peak times.
Between the hours of 12am and 5am, electricity usage in the UK is at its lowest, as most people are asleep. As a result, energy suppliers often get reduced rates from power plants at these times. Some of these suppliers give this same benefit to their customers. This means you can pay less for electricity used at night.
What time is off-peak electricity in the UK?
To use off-peak electricity, you need a ‘Time of Use’ tariff. If not, you will pay a flat rate all day for your energy usage. Most energy suppliers also offer an Economy 7 tariff, which can give you 7 hours of off-peak electricity per day if you heat your office electrically. For either tariff, you will need a smart meter installed.
The exact times for peak and off-peak electricity rates depend on the energy supplier. Some rates may change based on current demand. Most off-peak electricity times are from about 12am to 5am, but some can start earlier or finish later. The night rate is when power is cheapest, but if you use electricity between the peak periods of 5pm to 8pm, you can expect to pay more for your electricity bill.
How to optimise off-peak electricity usage

Unless you move all your staff to the night shift, you will probably still use electricity during busy hours for lights, heating, and working. However, you can save money by changing your routine to use power at night when rates are lower.
Consider running your dishwasher or other water-based appliances at night, as these appliances account for about 14% of energy bills and paying less can make a big difference. Also, charge devices overnight and schedule system maintenance and updates to take place during off-peak times.
Many smart devices can be set to turn on or off at specific times. By scheduling unused devices to turn off during peak times, you can save money with little effort.
